AMA Supercross Round 4 – San Francisco, CA
Round 4 of the Monster Energy AMA Supercross Series had something for the whole family. We had Thrills, Spills and a Senior Moment as well. With Chad Reed out after surgery on his hand and now James Stewart out after having wrist surgery the season seemed to belong to Ryan Dungey. Or did it? Dungey came into Round 4 as the current point’s leader and winner of back to back SX races in his rookie year. So could he make it 3 wins in a row?
In the SX Heat Dungey had a rough go of it crashing into a tuff-block, but still managed to qualify for the Mains. Oh yea and that senior moment we mentioned; seems Kevin Windhams age may have caught up to him tonight. Windham was in 3rd in the Heat when he proceeded to think Lap 7 was in fact the last lap of the race. Low and behold it wasn’t and Windham had to pin it to regain the 3rd place spot he had just before the checkered flag. He still has the speed, but is senility kicking in? Naaaaaaaaahh!
In the SX Main it was Dungey grabbing the holeshot. He seemed to be off to another great race holding off David Millsaps and Ryan Villopoto. That is up until he crashed in the very same spot as his crash in his Heat race. Millsaps followed suit shortly after with a spill of his own giving Villopoto the lead. Some say Villopoto seems out of shape or is possibly riding with an injury this year. Not tonight! Villopoto ran with the lead and took it straight to the podium. Josh Hill finished 2nd with yet another impressive race, and Millsaps finished 3rd. Dungey had to settle for 4th place, but is still the current point’s leader.
In the SX Lites West, Jake Weimer has yet to be challenged winning 3 straight. Could anyone keep him from winning 4? Cole Seely came out and took the holeshot, but Trey Canard put an end to his lead quickly. Canard held Weimer and the rest of the pack off the entire race and took the podium breaking Weimers streak of 3 straight wins. Weimer took 2nd place; followed by Broc Tickle who took 3rd. Weimer is still the point’s leader.
Dungey was limping noticeable after the race, but told his followers on Twitter that he was a bit banged up and sore and will be back next week. Let’s see how long Stewart will be out and if he can try to make ground this season. Dungey may just have had a bad night, but Villopoto will surely be confident going into San Diego next weekend as will Josh Hill who is 2nd in points. Seems Weimer may have company this year as well with Canard and Wil Hahn coming on strong.
