2010 AMA Supercross – Round 5, San Diego Preview
The 2010 AMA Supercross season has began like no one could have expected. With big name riders like Chad Reed and James Stewart going out with injuries most may have expected Ryan Villopoto to run away with the Championship. Look no further than the rookie Ryan Dungey to be leading the way in points this season in an almost effortless fashion.
Things got a little tighter though last weekend when Dungey succumbed to a crash of his own. The hit was hard enough that most thought he too may be out for a few races, but other than being banged up a bit Dungey will be in San Diego on Feb 6th to compete.
With all the success he has had this season Dungey now has some serious competition. Josh Hill only trails Dungey in the point standings by 11 points. Hill has come on strong this season making the Yamaha San Manuel team proud despite there loss of Stewart for a few races. Now the guy everyone thought may have been a bit out of shape or riding with an injury has come to play as well. Ryan Villopoto who came off his first SX win of the season last weekend in San Francisco is now in competition for the championship. With his 1st place win last weekend, Villopoto is a mere 2 points behind Hill, and 13 points behind Dungey. With that being said look for a tight race between the top 3 points leaders.
In SX Lites West things have begun to tighten up as well. Point’s leader Jake Weimer whose streak of 3 straight was broken last week by Trey Canard has really put some pressure on Weimer. Canard is 16 points behind Weimer and Wil Hahn and Broc Tickle have looked real strong of late. Look for a tight race in the Lites this weekend as well.
All of the SX tracks have been able to avoid the rain out west this season. This weekend that may all change as there is rain in the forecast and the conditions may be a bit muddy. None the less bring it on! This has been one of the most exciting seasons in SX thus far and we would love to see a mud-cakin’, dirt-flyin’, tear-off rippin’ type race. Good luck this weekend to all and most of all Get Dirty!
